Hossegor is, quite simply, one of the best surf towns in the world. A deep underwater canyon just offshore — the Gouf de Capbreton — funnels Atlantic swell straight onto its beaches, producing waves of rare power and quality. It's little wonder the professional world tour stops here each autumn.
Why Hossegor?
These are beach breaks: fast, powerful waves that break over shifting sandbanks rather than reef. The result is thrilling for experienced surfers and, on the right day and beach, welcoming for beginners too. La Gravière, on the northern edge of town, is the star — a heavy, hollow barrel that hosts the pro contest.
The spots
La Gravière — experts only
Hossegor's signature wave: hollow, powerful and unforgiving. Spectacular to watch from the sand; strictly for confident, experienced surfers in the water.
La Nord & La Sud
The central Hossegor beach breaks, shifting with the sandbanks and the tide. Excellent when it's working — check the conditions before paddling out.
Les Bourdaines & Le Penon (Seignosse)
Just north in Seignosse, these beaches are often more forgiving and a favourite for improvers building confidence.
Capbreton — La Piste & VVF
To the south, Capbreton offers a variety of peaks and a lively town atmosphere, all within a few minutes' drive.
Beginners & families
New to surfing? The gentler beaches at low tide are the place to start, ideally with a lesson. And when the ocean is too big, Hossegor's calm saltwater lake is perfect for a relaxed swim or a paddle-board — a reassuring option for families.
When to go
- Summer (June–September) — warmest water, smaller and friendlier waves, lively beaches. The best window for beginners and families.
- Spring & autumn — bigger, cleaner swell for experienced surfers. September and October bring the pro season and the year's most powerful conditions.
- Winter — serious, cold and powerful; for the committed only.
Tides, sandbanks & safety
Because these are beach breaks, conditions can change hour to hour with the tide and the state of the sandbanks. In summer, always surf or swim on lifeguarded beaches and stay between the flags, and be mindful of rip currents. Check a daily forecast (Surfline or Windguru are popular) and, when in doubt, ask locally.
Wetsuit & water temperature
| Season | Water temp (approx.) | Wetsuit |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | 19–22°C | 3/2 mm — or boardshorts in peak August |
| Spring / autumn | 15–18°C | 4/3 mm |
| Winter | 12–14°C | 4/3 or 5/4 mm, boots |
Boards, lessons & hire
Hossegor, Seignosse and Capbreton are packed with surf shops and schools. Beginner group lessons, private coaching, and board and wetsuit hire are all easy to arrange locally — no need to travel with your own kit unless you'd like to.
